Staron Design Award 2010

Staron® Design Award Winner: Iredale Pedersen Hook Architects
Congratulations to Iredale Pedersen Hook Architects for being awarded the first National Staron® Design Award 2010. Iredale Pedersen Hook Architects have been awarded for excellence in design for their work on the Public Transport Authority (PTA) Information Centre in Perth The Staron® Design Award Judges Mandi Keighran, Stephen Varady and Amanda Stanaway, met on a beautiful sunny winter afternoon at Catalina's in Rose Bay, Sydney to view the entries, and decide on a winner. The entries to the first edition displayed different designs, styles and ideas from projects around the country. The design award judges unanimously decided that the winning entry by Iredale Pedersen Hook Architects
features a creative use of Staron® Solid Surfaces. Staron® Solid Surfaces has been used with a mix of other surfaces and materials to create a simple, but bold design. Staron® in Bright White surrounds the cabinets, creating the frame of a continuous and seamless frame which wraps through the benchtops, floors and walls. Replicating the smooth and uninterrupted running lines of a railway line, the solid surface continues around the space with no open joins.
The design creates a strong identity for PTA with the addition of vivid individual network line colours within the cabinets to hold the corresponding coloured brochures. The information centre is located above the underground station entry, and features clear structural glazing in the front. The glazing is in an elevation, exposing the activity of the information centre to everyone entering the station via the escalators below -creating a sense of intrigue. The long lines and bright colours used in the design attracts the eye through theglazed focal point into the PTA Information Centre. The design responds to the dynamic movement of the passing people and commuters. "Staron® was durable and easy to maintain, while being flexible enough to be on the floors, walls and benchtops", says Adrian Iredale, Director of Iredale Pedersen Hook Architects. "We were able to create identity and recognition through the use of colour and form", Adrian adds about thedesign. Staron® Design Awards, Edition 2 are now open for entries. Staron® is an affordable quality solid surface backed by a Samsung 10 Year Warranty for peace of mind. Enquiries can be directed to www.staron.com.au or 02 98227055. The ghost writer

When a successful British ghost writer, THE GHOST WRITER, agrees to complete the memoirs of former British Prime Minister ADAM LANG, his agent assures him it's the opportunity of a lifetime. But the project seems doomed from the start ‐ not least because his predecessor on the project, Lang's long‐term aide, died in an unfortunate accident. THE GHOST WRITER flies out to work on the project, in the middle of winter, in an oceanfront house on an island off the US Eastern seaboard. But the day after he arrives, a former British cabinet minister accuses Lang of authorizing the illegal seizure of suspected terrorists and handing them over for torture by the CIA-a war crime. The controversy brings reporters and protesters swarming to the island mansion where Lang is staying with his wife, RUTH, and his personal assistant (and mistress), AMELIA. As THE GHOST WRITER works, he begins to uncover clues suggesting his predecessor may have stumbled on a dark secret linking Lang to the CIA-and that somehow this information is hidden in the manuscript he left behind. Was Lang in the service of the American intelligence agency while he was Prime Minister? And was THE GHOST WRITER's predecessor murdered because of the appalling truth he uncovered? Resonating with topical themes, this atmospheric and suspenseful political thriller is a story of deceit and betrayal on every level - sexual, political and literary. In a world in which nothing, and no one, is as it seems, THE GHOST WRITER quickly discovers that the past can be deadly and that history is decided by whoever stays alive to write it.

Press Release: The Passage

In a city frequently lauded for it's enviable array of eateries and watering holes, Sydneysiders are often left wanting when it comes time for a little late night revelry. Amidst a sea of pubs, clubs and swanked up bars exists a glaring void for those seeking an element of intimacy and seclusion in their exploits after dark.
Introducing The Passage - An unprecedented and considered alternative to Sydney's drinking culture.
On par with industry trends both locally and abroad The Passage will provide a high level of service in a welcoming, intimate venue. Set apart from the current crop of small bars, The Passage will boast a refined food and beverage offering and a 3am trading license - allowing the venue to transition from small bar to small club as the night rolls along.
Nestled amongst the bustle of Darlinghurst's Victoria Street, The Passage will breathe new life in to the infamous L'Otel premises and reinstate this iconic establishment as a unique late night venue set away from the fuss and flurry of Sydney's nightclub strips.
The Passage promises to be Sydney's new taste sensation, epitomising laudable taste in every facet from ambience, to dining, drinking and entertainment. The Passage is set to alter the hospitality industry defining a new niche of contemporary flare all of its own.
Sharing a plate of delectable food, mulling over the day with a glass of wine and moving into the night with a classy cocktail and sounds to match every moment and mood.
The three members of its founding team Andrew Emerson, Ed Loveday and Mark Eggers all bring their own speciality ingredients to the venue.
Andrew was at the helm of Paddington's thriving Fringe Bar when it was nominated for Australian Hotel of the Year (Bartender Magazine) and Australian Entertainment Venue of the Year (AHA.) His extensive knowledge of bar management and his personable nature and attention to detail will ensure an evening at The Passage is a memorable experience to be regularly shared for years to come.
Ed Loveday, brings with him a successful history in bar entertainment management, including being the Venue Manager of Kit and Kaboodle when it won ‘Nightclub of the Year' at the 2009 Bar Awards. Ed's passion for food, wine and cocktails will guarantee a unique dining, drinking and entertainment experience to compliment each stage of the evening from lingering meal moments to late night revelry.
The Third face of The Passage is Mark Egger's whose background in project management and social media will ensure The Passage's reputation as a place to see and be seen.
The final ingredient needed to make this sharing recipe complete was a chef who valued the experience of his food as much the experience of the people who share it together. Chris Cranswick-Smith, the internationally trained and Michelin experienced chef and the man responsible for Surry Hills renowned tapas venue Emmilou joined The Passage team, "to evolve the way that people dine. The way that we all interact, drink, socialize and engage around food and beverage."
The Passage will offer a diverse menu of snacks, light meals and sharing platters made up of refined, fresh foods and an expertly selected range of Australian and International wines, beers, spirits and cocktails comprised of seasonal fruits and cordials. The beverage and food menu of The Passage has been given the utmost attention to ensure that this innovative teams passion for food with simple finesse and drinks with complimenting flavors is as memorable as the memories that are made and shared around it.
Come down and enjoy the Passage experience.

Australian National Construction Review feb 2010

When Altis and Mainbrace wanted a touch of style for the new food Court at Wollongong Central, they relied on the impeccable taste of the team at Cafe Culture. They specialise in sourcing and supplying high-quality, distinctively designed furnishings and fittings for any project, anywhere in Australia.
For the food court, they sourced and supplied a dozen Skoop bar stools, an Italian designed product, and 20 Lithgow Ottomans, crafted from recycled Tasmanian Oak. Cafe Culture modify furnishings where required to suit a specific project's needs. In this case, the Skoop bar stools were altered to allow part filling with sand for greater stability. "Our range is carefully selected and we have confidence in all our Products. Of course the aesthetic of the product is paramount, while taking into consideration our client base and the various budgets they will have," said Director Marnie Hammond. "We do work on a varied selection of projects with interiors designers, as our range crosses over all areas: hospitality, commercial, retail, residential, aged care. "We visit the Milan Furniture Fair every year to meet up with our suppliers and review new products and trends as well as talking with the interiors designers to come up with custom solutions. Cafe Culture offers Service, Quality Products and a commitment to ensuring everyone is satisfied, and happy with the outcome we have provided."
The range of products for both indoor and outdoor spaces includes lighting, chairs, lounges, stools, tables, custom-made furnishings, and the innovative Bloom Pots, 100 per cent recyclable polyethylene pots in a range of colours, shapes and sizes, which incorporate a light in the base, designed in Holland and exclusive to Cafe Culture. Green is absolutely in style: Cafe Culture's Australian-made product lines are sourced from sustainable manufacturers working with either recycled, plantation or FSC-certified timbers, and generally, finishes, adhesives and fabrics are low VOC. This can-do team of design-savvy women have been helping create distinctive spaces for over a decade. Their past projects include the Shangri La Hotel, Gold Coast Airport, Robina Town Centre, Martin Place Bar, Atari Australia, Australian Customs, the University of New South Wales, and the Museum of Contemporary Art. They are just completing work on The Mil, Made in Italy, and St Marys Leagues Club.

RECENT PROJECTS IN QUEENSLAND

YHA DRIFTERS CAFÉ, BRISBANE CITY
In addition to a brilliant new development on their existing site overlooking the Brisbane River, YHA have launched their new café, Drifters, using a smart selection of furniture from Italy, Australia and Asia. The new Woven Image Jigsaw fabric was used on interior banquette seating and outside the ever-popular Plantation Teak and Stainless Steel range compliments the remodelled courtyard, with its built in bench seats and Liberty chairs from Gaber.
DANA KITCHENS
We stock a lot of product to suit many budgets and styles in our Sydney warehouse so we are often able to help clients out with great furniture at short notice. We supplied durable bar stools for a college Home Economics Café at short notice and they are very pleased with the value for money the Over stool provided.
APPLE TREE MEDICAL CENTRE, CAIRNS
Myriad Design have created fresh and beautiful reception area and rooms for the Apple Tree Medical Centre in Cairns, using natural light timbers and bright splashes of paint and fabric. Our timber chairs were brushed in Lime Wash and turned timber table legs supporting the desks and counters were finished in many shades of glossy two pack paint.
PACE UNIVERSITY, WOOLANGABBA
The brand spanking Pharmacy Australia Centre of Excellence (PACE) next to Princess Alexandra Hospital chose some basic, yet heavy duty outdoor dining tables for their dining terraces.

You get what you pay for

US Astronaut John Glenn once commented: ‘As I hurtled through space, one thought kept crossing my mind- every part of this capsule was supplied by the lowest bidder'.
A sobering thought! Now, we know furniture isn't Rocket Science, but its still an important formula and a key ingredrient in the success of your venue. Put your mind at ease and let us help you find the best and most suitable furniture for your project. We will work toward any budget, but sometimes the least expensive is simply not good enough!

About our showdog, Rocky

Everyone who has been into the Surry Hills studio has met our little white mascot, Rocky. I decided to adopt a dog from Monika's Doggie Rescue in June 2009 after a friend had opened my eyes to how many abandoned dogs across NSW needed a loving home.
I had a list of dogs to meet that day at Ingleside, all recommended by Monika, who suited my home and lifestyle. One poor dog was so frightened to interact with me that all I could do was give him a gentle cuddle. There were a few in this state, but most I saw were happy little mutts who just hadn't been loved by their previous owners. Rocky was a five year old dirty, white Maltese cross. I liked him immediately because he was so relaxed- he was keen to be walked on a lead and allowed me to turn him onto his back, check his eyes and inside his ears and mouth. It's so hard to understand why his owners hadn't claimed him in the two months he was at Monika's, as he had been microchipped as a pup and was fully traceable.
Rocky was obviously starved of close human affection and formed an almost immediate bond with me. One long bath and two shampoos later, Rocky was well on his way to being part of the Cafe Culture team! I was very lucky that he had been toilet trained, responded quickly to commands and loves people, especially children, so he was welcomed to come to work with me at the studio.
I have now had Rocky for six months and am constantly reminded of how lucky we both are. He follows me everywhere- a loyal little shadow. He gently greets customers and spends most of the day asleep under my desk. It's a tough life for some!

Bonaldo: Over seventy years of history and passion for design ... in the rain

An autumn evening .. It's five o'clock. In Milan, in Via Ennio to be precise, here they come in ones and twos, the guests are arriving for the presentation of Bonaldo's monograph.
The disrespectful weather threatens all sorts - from a light rain, perfect to clear the air (but in July!), to Hurricane Titti, forcing the ladies to make sure they have a change of clothes with them.
Despite the gloomy forecast, enthusiasm wins the day: whether because of the umbrellas, large and small, promptly opened, the never before experienced absinthe cocktail, or because the rain brings that touch of romance, the fact remains, the evening still went extremely well.
We met so many friends - from the press, work colleagues, clients and partners. We celebrated Bonaldo and its history, and we all want to continue just like this, with the positive energy of always. So, thank you for your warm handshakes, for your sincere compliments, for the jokes, and for not running off at the first drop of rain.
And if this isn't passion...............

Decadent Nonsense

Saturday Indesign 2009 was the place to be for style aficionados and quality furniture devotees. Cafe Culture’s soiree was held in conjunction with Brintons Carpets at our Sydney studio on Adelaide Street, Surry Hills. Featuring major brands such as Bontempi, Billiani, Bonaldo, Gaber, Origlia, Rexite, PSM, OMP as well as many more breath-taking products from Milan and Australia, the Cafe Culture showroom was truly a sight to behold.
Drawing inspiration from the saucy theme ‘Decadent Nonsense’ the studio was transformed into an atmosphere of the weird and wonderful with the help of the fabulous Luchetti Krelle. With a steady stream of interested guests and onlookers, the champagne was flowing and the day was an absolute success for all involved. Featuring everything from circus mirrors and abundant fruits, cheeses and chocolates, to fortune tellers to the giant burlesque cut-out photo where guests were photographed- the day mixed an assortment of contemporary styling with a nostalgic side-show alley theme.
On Friday evening, as a prelude to Saturday Indesign, the team at Cafe Culture hosted an invitation-only VIP event preview of new products, Spider, Askew, Peanut B, Tectonic, Lady P and Cucina, as well as the latest design collection by Brintons Carpets, ‘Reverb’.  Guests feasted on a selection of fine cheeses and sipped on a selection of imported Italian and local Australian wines.
